The Third annual Father-Son camping trip was last weekend. It started with three Dad's and we add a new family each year. This year there were 5 Dad's and 6 Boys for a crowd of what seemed like 33. We spent the weekend at Honholz Lakes on the Colorado/Wyoming border, near the Medicine Bow mountain range. We camped in a US Forest Service area, which means there were no campsites or facilities. It also meant we could pick any place to camp we wanted. We found a truly amazing spot that backed up to the forest and overlooked a huge, rolling meadow. The boys had a blast running all over the place, and at nightfall, after Smores, the Dad's had a great time relaxing around the campfire.
We found out from a game warden that one of the 3 lakes had been stocked the day before. He recommended we go there if we wanted to get the boys on some starving little hatchery trout. We took his advice and the boys were pulling out the 'Bows one after another. Even Nathan running and splashing in the lake was not enough to scare them off.
One morning on the drive to the lake I spotted an antelope in full gallop coming in our direction a few hundred yards off. I hollered to the gaggle of boys riding in the back of the truck, "Look at the antelope!" Then I noticed the antelope was in full SPRINT, coming right at us! This was interesting, so I stopped to watch. That thing was really moving at us and closing fast. It was within 50 yards at full speed when it finally occurred to me that I may have a problem. I can't suddenly take off at full speed to avoid the Antelope-that-thinks-it's-a-Big-Horn-Sheep, lest I risk throwing a son or two out the back of the truck and leave them to the mercy of the schizo mammal. And I really didn't want to find out what sort of damage it might do the my pickup either. Fortunately she had second thoughts and pulled up with about 30 yards to go. I say she, because we saw the same antelope later that day with her two newborns. Not sure why she decided that the maroon Chevy pickup 300 yards away was a predatory threat, but that explains the only time in my life I've been charged by an antelope.
I know it's a tease to talk about the beautiful scenery and great fishing with no pics. You see, when I got home Sunday I turned on the sprinklers and flooded my basement. We had to evacuate the computer and furniture from the office so I haven't had a chance to download the pics yet. As soon as I do I will post a few.
